Been a tough day

At nine o'clock this morning our oldest daughter and her fiance pulled out of town. She is moving from Philadelphia (where she has lived for the last 5 years while going to school and working) to a small Alaskan town, nearest city Anchorage 100+ miles away.

And, although I am happy for her, I don't think I've ever been sadder in my life.

MR, I think my dad probably felt the same way when I first took off for New York City 43 years ago. (My brother did his best to fill in the noise gap in the house.) But it didn't keep the family apart. I won't be forever, though it probably feels that way now. That first real move out into a new part of the world is such a huge step for a young woman.

Yeah, I know, but it's still tough for dad's who care about their daughters.

I think I'd feel better if

1) I felt better about the relationships she's in. He's a good guy but it's oil and water for the last 5 years.

2) The move wasn't so dramatic. When it was originally Philly to Seattle I was ok, but this is exponentially different. Not only in distance but in population. She's moving from a population density of 10,700+ per square mile to 232 per square mile. This kid is not used to that kind of solitude.

3) She were closer to the contiguous 48 states than the former Soviet Union. She really will be able to say she can see Russia from her backyard :)
