Midnight Rider,

Haiti is a nation who's biggest religion is Voodoo. Do Voodoo practitioners even believe in the devil in the first place?

Pastorius said...

Damien,
From Wiki:

Haiti is a largely Christian country, with Roman Catholicism professed by 80% of Haitians. Protestants make up about 16% of the population. Haitian Vodou, a New World Afro-diasporic faith unique to the country, is practiced by an undetermined percentage of the population. Religious practice often spans Haiti and its diaspora as those who have migrated interact through religion with family in Haiti.

Here's an interesting article on Vodun (Voodoo, Voodou, etc., they're the same thing):

http://open.salon.com/blog/chantal_laurent/2009/05/16/most_religious_practices_originate_from_vodun

There are a number of points of similarity between Roman Catholicism and Vodun:

• Both believe in a supreme being.

• The Loa [Lwa] resemble Christian Saints, in that they were once people who led exceptional lives, and are usually given a single responsibility or special attribute.

• Both believe in an afterlife.

• Both have, as the centerpiece of some of their ceremonies, a ritual sacrifice and consumption of flesh and blood.

• Both believe in the existence of invisible evil spirits or demons.

• Followers of Vodun believe that each person has a met tet (master of the head) which corresponds to a Christian's patron saint.1

Pastorius,

Sorry my bad. I just assumed that was the case because I heard about how the voodoo religion was used as a means to motive the rebellious slaves. It led to the only successful slave revolt where black slaves overthrow their white masters. So I just assumed that the nation's main religion was voodoo. I shouldn't have done that. Sorry.

Point is, I suspect a lot of Haitian Catholics ALSO practice Vodun, or practice a kind of melded version of the two.

But, what do I know?

Pastorius said...

Damien,
Actually the point of my posts was more that I think you are partially right that Vodun is the major religion. However, I think it is melded with Catholicism.

Here's more:

The Vodun religion is practiced by over 60 million people worldwide. "Today, there are two virtually unrelated forms of the religion:
• An actual religion, Vodun practiced in Benin, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Haiti, Togo and various centers in the US - largely where Haitian refugees have settled.
• An evil, imaginary religion, which we will call Voodoo. It has been created for Hollywood movies, complete with violence, bizarre rituals, etc. It does not exist in reality."1

Vodun's roots trace back 6000 years directly to the Yoruba people of sub-saharan Africa. They lived in Western Africa in The Kingdom of Dahomey from 1690 - 1901. Dahomey occupied parts of today's Togo, Benin and Nigeria. Enslaved Africans brought the Yoruba religion or Vodun with them when they were forcibly shipped to Haiti and other islands in the West Indies.

Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Judaism and many other monotheistic religions (a single omnipotent creator-god rules over the universe along with several hundred lower gods [saints]), can trace their origins back to the religion of Vodun. This is because Vodun is a religion of a single creator-god [Olorun/God] and lesser "spirits" [lwas/saints] that promises eternal life through worship and has many other similar religious traditions reflective of the modern religions that developed later.

Pastorius,

Thanks for the info.

Just like the terrorists who happen to be Muslims in Iraq justifying Katrina. I remember there being flooding in Saudi Arabia but the same terrorists said nothing about flooding that would kill innocent Muslim pilgrims.

I also wonder what are Haitian Christians thinking about Pat Robertson too.

Damien said...

mah29001,

I have a feeling that many of them are extremely angry.

Haiti has often been said to be 90% Catholic and 100% Voudun. Bit of an exaggeration but it is definitely the cultural religion there, though probably less so than in the past. There are two "sides" of Voudun, the Rada and the Petro, the latter being the "dark" side. Don't think there is a direct counterpart to Satan, though the Baka is an evil spirit and Baron Samedi is guardian of the dead. But that idiot Robertson would just write the whole thing off as satanic anyway.

One of the main Voudun temples was out on the northwest coast. I don't know if it is still there but it would be interesting to find out whether it is still standing.

There's a photo of the hotel I stayed in that was taken today at http://twitpic.com/xxtrc. So glad it's survived. It's strange reading the tweets and imagining what's going on there. The lights are still off and they are fixing the pipes to get the water running again and everyone is going to sleep out on the driveway again.

I think they'll be angry at Pat on another day. I'm sure there is enough to occupy their minds without giving two shits what he's running his mouth about.

Damien said...

Maccusgermanis,

Although I wouldn't use that language, you're probably right. Many of them are probably too desperate to Care right now, but when they are safe, they'll be angry if they find out.

Whatever Haiti's religion, I love your title. How accurate is that??

Does he know because the Devil told him so? I heard he wasn't speaking with his mother anymore!

Geez!!

Pastorius said...

Culturist John,
Pat Robertson knows Haiti made a pact with the devil because Pat Robertson talks directly with the devil.

Damien said...

Pastorius,

Hmmmm... I bet the next conversation goes something like this.

Pat Robertson: Master everything is going according to plan.

Satan: Excellent, keep pretending to be a Christan. The stupid things that come out of your mouth, the more it will make real Christians look stupid.

Pat Robertson: Yes Master, should I also blame this hurricane on a the rumor that the people of Haiti were about to legalize gay marriage?

Satan: Excellent Idea my minion, and don't forgot to also blame it on our acceptance of the evil teachings of evolution.

- : )

Pastorius said...

Perfect, Damien. Absolutely perfect.

Probably, though, the truth is more mundane. These conversations go on in Pat Robertson's insane brain, but he thinks he's talking to God.

He's just crazy, that's it.

Damien said...

Pastorius,

You do realizing I'm joking? That's what I use that smiley face for.

Pastorius,

In all fairness through, Pat Robertson is one of few media personalities willing to openly criticize Islam, and speak out agianst Jihad. He even interviewed Robert Spencer on the 700 Club once or twice.

CJ -- assuming you're talking about Robertson, he's a real piece of work, isn't he?

Pastorius said...

Damien,
I knew you were joking. I just thought it was funny, and entirely appropriate. And, I think Pat Robertson may actually have conversations like that going on in his head.

I don't see what he said as so bad.
I admire someone who honestly speaks his mind with integrity and conviction.
He may be wrong, but he may be right, but regardless of either, the man is always there on the job helping the unfortunate which he is already doing.
I remember when he was viciiously criticized for suggesting that Hugo should'[ve been taken out and he's never shy about stating the truth about mohammedanism as so so many of his self-righetous detractors are.

It's hard to give Christ a bad name.

But I'm glad to see on whose FORTUNE depends on Christ giving a good try.

Every person who considers himself to be a 'social conservative' should go out their way to make sure HE KNOWS what a completely evil ignoramus he is making of himself. NO MATTER WHAT ELSE ROBERTSON DOES, OR HAS DONE
