TUNISIA IS FOLLOWING THE PATH OF IRAN: ISLAMISTS TAKING OVER
From the Astute Bloggers:
Tunisia's underground Islamic movement has emerged at the forefront of nationwide protests against its leadership and appears set to emerge as the strongest political force in elections.

... Tunisia's strong record of promoting women's rights and liberal stance on social issues such as the sale of alcohol is vulnerable as its political system is torn apart by the popular uprising.

Sana Bel Mkaddem, a Tunis resident, said she was fearful her rights would be eroded after elections. "We need to know what the parties represent. Most Tunisians are open-minded and view religion as a private issue but because of the past of this country, I'm worried that we could see the Islamisation that we've seen in other countries."

Pastorius,

Usually when something sounds took good to be true, it is too good to be true. Looks like instead of a thriving democracy, we'll have another violent Islamic theocracy on our hands. At least in this case it doesn't look like the US government will have played any role in its creation.

Does the Jimmy Carter Administration count as the American Government?

Pastorius,

Jimmy Carter was involved in this while he was president? That was in the seventies, more than thirty years ago. This Tunisian revolution just happened recently.

Pastorius,

What are you talking about?

Damien,
You said: At least in this case it doesn't look like the US government will have played any role in its creation.

I respond: I thought you were referencing the fact that the Carter Administration greenlighted the overthrow of the Shah and was, therefore, responsible for the Khomeini Revolution.

Pastorius,

I agree, Its largely Carter's fault that we're dealing with this whole Islamic insurgency now. I was referring to the Tunisian revolution in particular through, which I don't think we had anything to do with.

Laws of History
1)Every successful revolution is sparked by some kind of minority position

2)They all change direction (one exception)

I think we probably all agree that at least a solid PLURALITY in every arab/muslim nation would vote for sharia if they could, so can it be any surprise that when the rats are thrown out a POPULAR position is essentially the Muslim Brotherhood and it's think-alikes?

Americans have yet to recognize this or the correlative meanings .. that if we want to KEEP the popular but inimical result from happening we have to side with some bad guys, OR that if we want DON'T want to side with the bad guys and allow popular Representative (and Islamist) govt to ensue THERE WILL BE NO REWARDS, NO GRATEFULNESS, AND SOONER OR LATER AN IRAN LIKE, TALIBAN LIKE CONFRONTATION MUST RESULT.

SOONER OR LATER. IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.

We need to hear this if not from leadership, then from pundit land

Epa,
Wow, you're right.

I hadn't ever thought about it that way.

You ought to write a post on this.
