(Reuters) - The United Nations authorised military action to curb Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi on Thursday, hours after he threatened to storm the rebel bastion of Benghazi overnight, showing "no mercy, no pity."

"We will come, zenga, zenga. House by house, room by room," he said in a radio address to the eastern city.

Al Jazeera television showed thousands of Benghazi residents in a central square celebrating the U.N. vote, waving anti-Gaddafi tricolour flags and chanting defiance of the man who has ruled for four decades. Fireworks burst over the city.

Gaddafi had warned that only those who lay down their arms would be spared vengeance to be exacted on 'rats and dogs'.

"It's over. The issue has been decided," Gaddafi said. "We are coming tonight...We will find you in your closets.

"We will have no mercy and no pity."

The U.N. Security Council passed a resolution endorsing a no-fly zone to halt government troops now around 100 km (60 miles) from Benghazi. It also authorised "all necessary measures" -- code for military action -- to protect civilians against Gaddafi's forces.

But time was clearly running short for the city that has been the heart of Libya's revolution.

Residents said the Libyan air force unleashed three air raids on the city of 670,000 on Thursday and there has been fierce fighting along the Mediterranean coastal road as Gaddafi moves to crush the month-old insurrection.

French diplomatic sources said military action could come within hours, and could include France, Britain and possibly the United States and one or more Arab states; but a U.S. military official said no immediate U.S. action was expected following the vote.
Got that? According to this military source, we voted to authorize a use of force to stop an impending massacre, but no immediate action is required.

That's life under the Obama Administration .

Meanwhile, from Ace of Spades:

Lindsey Graham: I'm Just Thinking the American President Should Be As Bold As The French One. Is That Too Much To Ask?

Vid at CNN.
A couple of points here: The problem is not just that Obama has been, until now, de facto in support of Qaddaffy staying in power. That sort of realpolitik judgment might be defensible.

The problem is that his desire to look good for the cameras and his Michael-Jackson-like dwindling band of worshippers causes him to say things like "Qaddaffy must go" and then sneak in a quick long 18 holes of golf.

Announce a policy, idiot, and then commit to it. Do not encourage Libyans to join the rebellion only to then sit back and be slaughtered in huge numbers.

That's blood on the hands.

If it is your policy to sit back and do nothing, then say so, so people can make potentially life-saving decisions based upon the real facts of the situation.

Meanwhile, the French say they're ready to begin airstrikes at 6:00 ET tonight. And that will entail attacking Qaddaffy's air-defense network and radars and radio towers and such. (That always needs to be done as a first step if you're flying over hostile territory, of course.)

I actually think the French can do this and turn the war around.

So, what, it's just going to be France and Britain then?

Truthfully, while it is an embarrassment to us, it is a good thing that France and Britain are having to do this, isn't it?

It's France & Britains oil supply line in question.
America should stand aside and let Libyans settle this within. As long as it's muslim against muslim - or shia vs. sunni - let them have at it. Encourage it. The sunni-shia divide could keep them busy and off our back.

I agree with anon, and I am not defending Obama. He stumbled into this policy (or lack thereof).

Let the Euros and the Arabs learn how to fight their own fight for a change.

We sold the Arabs all those plans and armaments. Are they for show or for go?

I think this is the first and probably only time I'm in agreement with the Obama administration on anything.
My gut feeling is that Quadaffi is by far the lesser of two evils in this circumstance.
Saw a video of the rebels and they were continuously screeching 'allah you shitbar' the whole time.

Forgot to put my name on the above comment.
Looks like Egypt and Tunisia are also going sour. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the Jews and Copts are getting increased persecution since the successful revolutions.

We will all hang together or we will all hang separately.

Didn't the Lord of the Rings make this point?

Pasto,

I had a dream last night,

Since it is forbidden for Muslims to kill Muslims, It is the duty of the Crusaders to protect the Libyan innocent civilian population from the Genocidal Monster Gaddafi who has been proven to be a Jew any how !....
The world wide Islamic Solidarity, will continuo to resist Allah's enemies by all means and protect the unshaken Arab unity and Brotherhood until the last Infidel's drop of blood !
The Tsunami of RAGE, which is flooding the Middle East these days with the blessing of Democracy and Enlightenment, will hit the shores of Alaska and New Zealand and teach the pigs and monkeys a lesson which they will never forget!

I woke up sweating and trembling to the near-by Muezzin's call for morning prayer ...

Allah Hu Akbar !

I'm not sure what I think about this development.

I get nervous when outside nations get involved in another country's inner workings.

Not that I give a damn about Gadaffi.

Not that I support Obama's ditherings and hesitations.

But just how much should "international law" prevail in any sovereign nation's inner workings?

Pastorius said...

I agree with cjk, every time we interfere it gets even worse, and it ends up landing on the Christians and Jews.

BUT,

Ghaddafi has signaled the will to genocide? Are we supposed to just let that happen?

Maybe so.

Hehehe! Never heard that one before, but it does sound like that's what they are saying!

Blogger's help with so-called spam comments is a pain. I'm forever having to check my own spam folder at Blogger. The other day, Blogger identified as spam one of my frequent commenters. **sigh**

... which is exactly what is happening here. American Rose is one of our favorite commenters. Heck, Midnight Rider even dedicates music posts to her.

Ahhhh. Well, I certainly am feeling the love, ... and I can use some:)

I'm fine with publishing as Anon American Rose, but it's funny that they will allow an Anon post, but not a regular reader's post?
