This guy was probably stunned to the point of unconsciousness by the realisation that he had been mauled by the beast he loved. I'm guessing that once he realised they meant to murder him he just couldn't cope with the idea and his mind shut down. To have to face his own stupidity consciously would likely have been to much for him, even at the point of death. I laugh at him.
There is the utterly pathetic and vile woman Beverley Giesbrecht who faced the same, though she had many months to examine her own horror. The photos of her during her captivity would make a better man than I feel sorry for her.
All of these people play with murderers, and when they are murdered, I laugh at them.
You support murderers, you are as guilty as they are.

When I read about this guy getting offed by his comrades, it made my day.

You are absolutely right.
In the years before 9/11 I read The Sheltering Sky and a book of Bowles' short stories over and over. I believe this reading endeavor prepared me to understand what happened in the attacks more than most of those around me.
At the time I was reading Bowles' stories, I bought into the Liberal idea that I was reading a sympathetic portrayal of another culture, a culture of "The Other", a culture I could not understand using my own set of references, a culture I had to afford respect.
But when 9/11 happened, I realized I absolutely did not have to respect the culture of the Sheltering Sky and of A Distant Episode.
I'm not familiar with the author you refer to above, but I do know of Christopher Isherwood and his "Berlin Stories" centred around Sally Bowles, the girl we know from Cabaret, the movie. In the short stories, she lives in the perlude to Nazism, a culture going very malignant while she is oblivious to it all. One wishes to reach out and grab her and shake her and say, "Can't you see the obvious?" Isherwood could see it even then, but many were empty-headed Bowles who were having a great time in spite of the horrors developing all around them, and they made excuses, pretended, ignored, and finally paid for it.
